The South Texas Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
Up to 12 college students from the South Texas region are selected to participate in a 3-year, longitudinal program comprising of consecutive summer research intensives in addition to educational enrichment and research commitments during the school year. The South Texas Undergraduate Opportunities Program requires considerable effort from each participant, therefore, no other major activities should be planned during the duration of the summer program. There are also many activities scheduled throughout the academic school year which students are expected to make every effort to attend. Reimbursement for transportation costs may be available based on individual need. Students will be expected to summarize their research findings either as a poster presentation, a written abstract, or as an oral presentation, varying by program year.
We are now seeking the next cohort of 2025! The program uniquely establishes a mentor pair with the scholar’s home institution and UTHSA that forms a triad of mentorship and academic rigor. Scholars will be guided through a longitudinal, 3-year training experience that involves summer research immersion as well as year-round activities designed to develop their scientific interests, orient them to expectations in research settings, introduce the principles of responsible research, and socialize them to the research enterprise in order to prepare them for successful entry to graduate or professional schools. Through the hands-on training and leadership development of STUROP, scholars will be poised to improve Texas communities through educational excellence, scientific discovery, and clinical care.
